Paint Shop Pro has several retouch modes some of which produce the same effects as the Color Adjustment functions. The Retouch tool uses the same brush tips as the other brushes in Paint Shop Pro, but, the Retouch tool paints with an effect and does not apply it to an entire area. To better understand this unique tool we will explore a few of these modes in this lesson plan.

Lesson Basics

Retouch Tool Options and Modes

  • Activate the Retouch Tool from the tool bar

  • In Paint Shop Pro 7 the first tab of the tool palette sets the brush tip shape and other options including the retouch modes however in Paint Shop Pro 6 the second tab sets the retouch modes (See the table below for the description of each mode)

  • In Paint Shop Pro 6 & 7 the second tab sets "Sample Merged. To retouch all layers check Sample merged, however if you want to only retouch a particular layer, make sure that it is the active layer and leave "Sample merged" unchecked

Applying with the Retouch Tool

  • Retouching with Freehand Strokes

    1. Click the image at the point that you want the brush stroke to begin

    2. Drag the mouse to apply the effect. Depending on the brush that you are using you may want to use small strokes

  • Retouching with Straight Strokes

    1. Click the image at the point that you want the brush stroke to begin

    2. Press and hold the Shift key

    3. Click where you want to end the first line

    4. Continue to hold the shift key and you can continue to add additional lines by clicking the image

    5. After selecting the line(s) release the shift key

Tip: Since the Retouch tool is generally used on a specific area of an image it is best to select and zoom in on the area before using the retouch tool
