In Paint Shop Pro the Color Replacer Tool uses colors from the active color palette to replace one color in an image with a new color. The Color Replacer tool is a versatile paint tool. This lesson plan will review the options and steps that will replace a color to a specific isolated area or replace the color throughout an image.

Color Replacer Tool Basics

The Color Replacer tool uses the foreground stroke and background fill colors of the active color palette to replace one color with a new color in an image. This is done by applying brush strokes to only those areas that the brush touches or double clicking the image to replace the color throughout.

Setting Color Replacer Options

  • Select the Color Replacer tool from the Tool palette (the cursor will change to a brush)

  • Select the color that you are replacing as the foreground or background color

  • Select the color that you are substituting as the "other" active color

  • Select brush settings from the Color Replacer tool options palette.

  • Click on the second tab and set the tolerance value. This will determine how closely the colors of the image must match the old color in order to be replaced. As the tolerance is increased the more colors are replaced. In Paint Shop Pro 6 the second tab also includes a texture option

Replacing All Occurrences of a Color

  • To replace all occurrences of a color within a specific area, select the area

  • Limit color replacement to a specific layer, by making it the active layer

  • Double click the image with either the left or right mouse button:

    1. To replace the background color with the foreground color double click the left mouse button anywhere on the image

    2. To replace the foreground color with the background color double click the right mouse button anywhere on the image

Replacing Color to a Specific Area with Freehand Strokes

By using the color replacer tool as a brush, a color will be replaced only where the brush touches the image:

  • To limit color within a specific area, select the area before applying the brush stroke

  • Limit color replacement to a specific layer, by making it the active layer

  • Position the cursor where you want to start replacing color

  • Press and hold down the left or right mouse button:

    1. To replace the background color with the foreground press and hold down the left mouse button

    2. To replace the foreground color with the background color press and hold down the right mouse button

  • Holding down the left or right mouse button drag the mouse to replace the color where the brush touches the image

  • Release the mouse button to end the brush stroke

Tip: Custom brushes can be used with the Color Replacer tool

Replacing Color to a Specific Area using Straight Brush Strokes

  • Position the cursor where you want to start replacing color

  • Click and hold the <Shift> key

  • Click where you want to end the first line segment

  • You can continue replacing color in line segments by continuing to hold the <Shift> key and clicking the image. After you have finished release the <Shift> key
