In Paint Shop Pro the Clone Brush is a brush tip that is used duplicate pixels in a graphic and copy them to another location. Two image areas are used when working with the Clone Brush.   The image areas used can be from one area of a graphic to another on the same graphic or you can clone from one graphic to another.  The Clone Brush can be applied  within a raster layer, between raster layers or, between two greyscale or 24 bit images.  In particular this Paint Shop Pro tool is very handy for touch-up work on photos and  photo enhancements.

Clone Brush Basics

  • Image areas used with the Clone Brush:

Source Area - The area containing the data that you are copying from

Target Area - The area that you copy to.  It can be within the same image or from another image of equal color depth

Clone Brush Options

  • Activate the Cloning Tool from the tool bar

  • In Paint Shop Pro 7 the first tab of the tool palette sets the brush tip shape and other options.  With the "Build up Brush" checked, each clone stroke applies more of the copied data.  However, when it is unchecked, the cloning is applied with the first brush stroke only. (In Paint Shop Pro 6 the Build up option is on the second tab with the sample merged)

  • In Paint Shop Pro 6 & 7 the second tab sets the Clone Mode:

Paint Shop Pro Version 7             Paint Shop Pro Version 6

Aligned Mode - The  source area moves each time the mouse is released.  The source area is the reference point for the cloning.  Each time the mouse is re-clicked, the brush clones the image relative to the distance from the source area

Non-Aligned Mode - The source area does not  move when the mouse is released.  Each time the mouse is re-clicked the starting point for the cloning returns to the same source area that was selected

Sample Merged - With the "Sample Merged" checked, the data on all layers will be cloned.  However, when it is unchecked, the cloning is applied to the current layer only

  • To apply a texture:

Paint Shop Pro 7 - To add a texture set the foreground texture on the  color palette

Paint Shop Pro 6 - To add a texture select a texture  from the second tab of the clone brush tool palette

Applying the Clone Brush

  • Cloning part of an image:

    1. Right click over the part of the image that you want to copy

    2. Select the layer or specific area that you want to place the cloned image

    3. Position the cursor where you want to start copying the source image

    4. Press down the Left mouse button.  Crosshairs will appear over the source area, which indicates which pixels are being copied to the target area

    5. Drag the mouse to clone from the source area to the target area

    6. Release the mouse button to end the brush stroke
